Not to be missed is the largest Christmas market, the «Christkindlmarkt», which you can visit in Bolzano, as well as the markets in Bressanone or Vipiteno, the one in Brunico in the eastern part of the region, and the picturesque market in Merano, a renowned spa town that is especially popular in the winter season.
In addition to these large and famous Christmas markets, you will also find smaller and lesser-known ones, such as those in Chiusa, San Candido and Val Gardena, which are just as enchanting and well worth a visit.
All of these Christmas markets are open every year from the end of November until 6 January, the day of the Epiphany.
The Christmas market in Lagundo is also very charming and is well known in the area for its wonderful, family-friendly atmosphere. Here you will find stalls and stands offering excellent regional handicrafts, hot drinks and traditional dishes.
Equally atmospheric and not to be missed is the Christmas market in Lana. It is not very large, but every year it conveys that special atmosphere that can only be felt during the magical Advent season.
At every Christmas market you can buy a wide variety of products, most of them handcrafted. From Christmas tree decorations and nativity scenes to wooden toys and felt slippers, as well as hats, scarves and many handmade gift ideas.
Also not to be missed are the many local South Tyrolean culinary specialities. Strolling among the stalls, you can sample Christmas biscuits, apple strudel, chocolate-dipped fruit skewers and the unmissable vin brûlé.
Most of these markets also offer a programme of activities suited to the youngest visitors. You can enjoy fairy tale readings and take part in Christmas biscuit-making workshops, or join puppet shows, carriage rides and carousel rides… You can also visit specially created petting zoos with animals, or join craft workshops suited to children and adults alike.
In short, Christmas markets offer moments of fun and joy for all members of the family.
